The annual exhibition at The Royal Academy made a welcome return this month. Following these uncertain times, it is wonderful to have the show open to the public to enjoy, after all the hard work of the artists, the Summer Exhibition selection team, and RA staff.
The Print Studio is pleased to have been involved in the production of a new limited-edition silk-screen print Tipitina, by Mali Morris RA. This follows on from last year's print, Mardi Gras, also made with Kip at the studio.

Mali kindly provided us a written statement on the print. Read her reflections upon the production of this work below:
“Tipitina is a new print that develops the discoveries made last year in Mardi Gras, and before that, the Toussaint series. I wanted to animate the space of this graphic medium, which is so different from my usual experience in the studio – where I proceed by trial and error in the fluid play of paint. Layering in silk-screen printing gives a literal space, but I was keen to open that up pictorially, by placement, and scale, and the dynamic relationship of quite stark colour relationships on a near-white ground. I made many paintings on paper first, to find the jumping off point into print.
I find titles for works when they are finished. The legendary Professor Longhair, composer of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, recorded by Allen Toussaint, also wrote Tipitina, and so this is another homage.
And the title seemed to fit the sensation of ‘tipping/touching’ along a horizontal spread, following on from the ‘almost-toppling-but-not’ of the previous print’s very vertical composition.
As always, I was in collaboration with the skilful and sensitive expertise of Kip and Alan, who seem to know where I want to be, and where I want to go, without too much explanation. And we all liked the song, when we played it on our phones, when the work was done.”
