The abstract paintings and prints produced by Alan Grabham are vividly colourful and visually stimulating. They typically contrast cool hues with flame-like oranges and reds and combine spontaneous drips and splashes with intentional marks.
A subtle gradient within the flaming red panel of Synaesthesia shows an appreciation of the possibilities of layering to create depth and tone. Bands of differing shades create a ‘halo’ around the circular form - a motif which appears frequently in the artist’s work to draw the viewer into points within the image. Throughout his printmaking portfolio, Grabham explores a variety of textural effects through combining sharply cut and torn edges in addition to painterly marks. Synaesthesia is part of a collection of vibrant prints produced in small editions.
