Since he started making prints at the studio last year, sculptor Jeff Lowe has been developing his portfolio and building on his innovative exploration into processes, materials and dominating scale.

In January 2020, Pangolin Gallery, London, exhibited a selection of Lowe's monoprints alongside small and large-scale sculptures. Jeff Lowe: In The Close Distance at Pangolin perfectly presented the visual parallels between his sculpture and work on paper. Where past work focussed on angles and heavier, more resistant materials, the recently exhibited works are a shift in direction. In conjunction with embracing more fluid shapes, Lowe seems to have focussed on a ‘lightness’ that is undeniably reflected in working with print on paper.

Holes cut through the layered free-standing sculptures and these same ‘breaks’ appear in the prints. The malleable metal sheets are lifted from their grounded, cylindrical compositions to the horizontal figures on paper. These direct visualisations through print explore layers through transparency and allow the eye to weave between windows of floating shapes.

Detached from the foundations of its sculptural predecessors, the arched, winged forms within Phoenix appear to triumphantly take flight.
